Sumptuous Sex at Le Follies Bergere, 1909 Paris

The Follies Bergere opened in Paris in 1869 as a music hall and a place to hold operettas, pantomimes, political meetings and vaudeville acts. As the Parisian taste for striptease in the 1890s began to take hold, elaborate costumes and stage sets were created to enhance the spectacular nude shows. The "Place aux Jeunes" launched in 1886, was a revue style music hall show featuring scantily clad women in elaborate costumes. As you can imagine, the show was a huge success. This photo from 1909 shows just how elaborate some of the costumes were.

This is a 19 year old Brigitte Bardot wearing a bikini at Cannes Film Festival in 1953, starting the trend of bikini-clad stars for the festival. Despite the controversy, some in France admired "naughty girls who decorate our sun-drenched beaches." Her bikini caused a sensation with photographers, and was considered shocking in Western countries. By todays standards it is rather tame but taken in context of the time period, the 1950's, it was ESCANDALO!!!!

Bardot, photographed wearing similar garments on beaches during the Film Festival (1953) and who wore a bikini in And God Created Woman (1956), helped popularize the bikini in Europe in the 1950s and created a market in the US. Photographs of Bardot in a bikini, according to the The Guardian, turned Saint-Tropez into the bikini capital of the world. The Cannes Film Festival, held on the French Riviera each May, remains as a reminder of the days when a starlet was as big as her swimsuit was brief.

I can't believe it. Can I really store my turtle necks and sweaters? I'm so ready for my summer frocks. The cold and rainy days are hopefully behind us and it's time for out door fun. We already went to a BBQ and took a late night troll for some ice cream. This is our kind of weather. The next stop is the beach!!

I love New York in the summer and photographer Joseph Szabo perfectly captures how amazing it is to be in the beach this summer in the city.

We were lucky to catch the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibit at the Sean Kelly Gallery yesterday. I have been a fan of Robert Mapplethorpe's work for some time and this was a very unique approach to showing his work. They had an array of diverse people that hand picked a photo that they liked and person expressed what that photo meant to them. It was beautiful. Make sure you treat yourself to the exhibit.

We recently had a little trip to New Orleans. Brendan's good friend got married and I had the chance to meet with my amazing friend Dean and visit some family that live there. New Orleans is some city, with tons of history and many amazing stories. Bourbon Street is a hot scandal and from what I remember (cocktails) it was beyond fun. Music and art fill the streets and there is just an electric feeling in the air!!

I went to two major Andy Warhol exhibits that were just incredible. They were held at the Brooklyn Museum and the other at the MoMA. Naturally, these exhibits led me to Interview Magazine and I used to collect them when I was a kid. The covers alone had me mesmerized. At the time, Interview magazine was physically a large magazine and was so colorful. I found it defiantly appealing to a fashion obsessed little bug like myself.

I had the pleasure of styling the sexy band Jessica 6 for their video "White Horse". I had the best time working with our muse and my best friend Nomi Ruiz. Nomi's voice and songwriting have been an inspiration in my art, heart and soul. I can't say enough about Andrew Raposo (awesome man) and Morgan Wiley. Not only are they beyond talented but more importantly they both look amazing in motorcycle jackets. I must also mention the wonderful Marco Ovando who directed the video. He has a great eye and brings much joy to any environment. (and he throws a good party) Loved every moment!!

The video premiered on Perez Hilton this week and of course it was beyond exciting!!! Check out Rica on Nomi in the video!!

Here is the amazingly talented Otis Redding tearing it up!!!!! I mean this footage really gets us dancing. Otis Redding was at the peak of his creativity and was unstoppable when he unfortunately died in a plane crash. He was 26 years old in 1967 when he died and it was way too soon.

Candy Darling was the definition of glamour. The Andy Warhol superstar was a sensation in the 1960's and early 1970's for being involved in such major cult classics like "Woman in Revolt" and " Flesh". I fell in love with the blonde beauty during my Warhol obsession in high school and right then and there I was hooked on everything that was Candy Darling. Darlings looks and natural talent was so ahead of it's time. Her iconic beauty has been an inspiration for not only myself but for so many who were taken by her extravagant beauty and demure. I would have loved being roommates with Candy Darling in 1968. It would have been all about boys, eyelashes, and gowns.

Did You Ever Want Satin Sheets?

There was a time in my life I wanted satin sheets. Maybe because it was the 1980's and I was watching Dynasty. They seem so "life styles of the rich and famous" and satin looked like such a major luxury. I can imagine myself sipping champagne and having caviar in these imaginary satin sheets I have draped on my bed. These days they don't seem as desirable to me. I'm guessing it would be the most uncomfortable sleep on earth and not to mention you may slide off the bed. Hot sexy nights may be a challenge and maybe a little tacky too. Ok a lot tacky. Well, I'm not buying a set anytime soon but if I did the color of course would be dusty pink.

Maybe satin sheets are best for a sexy editorial shoot.

Today dad would have been 67 years-old. My father passed away this summer and it's been of course a difficult time. Losing a parent really sucks and you are never really prepared for that moment when you get that awful phone call. Well enough of that. I'm writing to celebrate his life and share with you my loving relationship I had with him.

Dad saw my interest in fashion when I was really young and was completely supportive. In true dad fashion he right away he gave me a history lesson from A to Z. He told me to watch every big hollywood movie from the 1940's to the 1960's for inspiration. He bought me a book called "The Chronicle of Western Fashion" and that has been my fashion bible for the past 20 years. Dad would take me to Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendels like it was a playground and I would run around if were a jungle gym. I know there are pictures of me at 10 years-old somewhere wearing a fox coat in the Bloomingdales fur salon. Dad and I would watch fashion week on television together and have a full play by play commentary. "Oscar was wonderful. Did you see that chiffon?" This was from a Navy veteran and all around mans man. I love and miss him very much and wished that someday we walked into Bergdorf Goodman and see Rica there together.

As you may know by now we are in love with Patti Smith. We came across these photos today and it kick started our Patti Smith day. We have celebrated New Years Eve with her for two years and it's always a great time. She really rocks out hard and shares stories with us and reads from one of her books. It's a special night and we have certainly made it a new tradition for us to ring in the new year.

Here are the photos that made me extra excited today.

How cool is she? I mean really. We are friends in my head and have coffee and toast together at her place or a cafe every other Sunday.

Oh how I love Ellen Von Unweth. Her super sexy and sophisticated photographer have always been a personal favorite since the day I feel in love with fashion. What I admire most about her is that she truly captures the sexual strength a woman possess in all her photos. Do you remember her amazing Guess ads campaigns with the gorgeous Claudia Schiffer? I'm really excited to be at my desk today. I have little piles of inspiration in every corner of the office today (major mess). Crazy Times with Rica!

We did a outrageous interview last year and thought it was time to share it with you. The show is Rew n Who? and it's a fun show that highlights artist, writers, musicians and all around entertainment. The show reminds me of the awesome New York underground shows of the 1980's and 90's.
